All about the Philippines flag

History and composition of the Philippine flag

The Philippine flag consists of two horizontal stripes in blue and red, followed by a white triangle with a stylized golden sun and three gold stars. It is one of the symbols of the Republic of the Philippines, an archipelago in the Pacific Ocean composed of no less than 7641 islands spread over three main regions: Luzon in the north, Visayas in the centre and Mindanao in the south.

This rectangular flag with a ratio of 1/2 was adopted on 12th June 1898, the year in which the Philippines gained its independence from Spain. It was former President Emilio Aguinaldo who designed this flag following the Battle of Alapan between Spanish and Filipino opponents to crystallize the victory of the Filipinos and the proclamation of their independence!

Vexillary uses

According to the FIAV (International Federation of Vexillological Associations) sign directory, it is the national flag of the country which is represented by the vexillological grid. Thus this flag is used by the civilian side, the state and various Philippine army corps (army and navy).

When the country is declared at war, the Philippine flag is one of the only flags in the world which is raised inverted upside down. The red part must therefore float in such a way that it is visible in the upper part of the flag.

Meaning of the Philippines colours

The flag of the Philippines is one of the flags of the world with astronomical symbols such as the flags of Argentina, Biafra, Kurdistan, Namibia, Uruguay or Rwanda. It is adorned with a pretty golden sun with the desired graphics. It also has yellow five-pointed stars which can be seen on the flags of Cameroon, Cape Verde, the European Union, Mauritania, Niue or Vietnam.

The red stripe represents justice, truth and peace.

The white stripe symbolizes patriotism, courage, bravery (hence the reverse use in wartime).

The white triangle evokes the equality and fraternity of the people.

The sun has eight rays to represent the eight original provinces that had been colonized.

The five white stars embodies the three main geographical areas of the Philippine map, namely Luzon (the largest in the north that shelters the capital Manila), Visayas (the central archipelago) and Mindanao (the country's second island located south of the Philippine archipelago).
