History and graphic composition of the Taiwan flag

The Taiwan flag consists of a red background and a navy blue canton with a white sun with 12 rays. It is one of the symbols of Taiwan, an independent island located in southeast western China in the Eastern part of Asia that was once called the "Island of Formosa".  On the geographical map of Asia, Taiwan is located in the East China Sea off the Chinese coast opposite the provinces of Guangdong and Fujian.

The sovereignty of this territory is claimed by both Taiwan (Government of China) and mainland communist China (People's Republic of China represented by Xi Jinping). In the eyes of the United Nations, Taiwan is considered a dependent province of the People's Republic of China. However, some countries in the international community are struggling to maintain relations with Taiwan, but Taiwan's democracy is increasingly isolated internationally due to pressure from the Chinese government.

The flag of Taiwan is used as a civilian, state flag, as well as a state and navy flag. Its origins are rooted in Chinese history and internal conflicts.

It was created by Sun Yat-Sen and Lu Hao-Tung, and was first used by the Kuomintang, the Chinese nationalist party. It was adopted as the official symbol of the Republic of China in 1928.

The use of this badge is highly controversial both in Taiwan and elsewhere as it actually embodies Taiwan's extremely complex political situation and the persistent animosity between these two "Asian countries" : Taiwan and China.

UNDERSTANDING the Taiwan flag and its colours

The Taiwan flag is called in traditional Mandarin Chinese character "青天, 白日, 滿地紅" (literally blue sky, white sun, entirely red earth).

The sky blue canton with white sun was designed by Luo Hao-Tung, a martyr of the Chinese revolution. He wanted to represent the Chinese revolutionary army by this symbol. The twelve rays of the sun correspond to the twelve months of the year and the twelve Chinese units of measurement (shichen).

The red stripe represents the red earth, it was Sun Yat-Sen who added it to the flag to embody the blood spilled by the revolutionaries to bring down the Qing dynasty, the last Chinese dynasty and set up the DRC (Democratic Republic of China).

The three colours of the flag together: red, blue, white represent Sun Yat-Sen's Three Principles of the People (Triple Demismo), namely liberal democracy, nationalism and social justice.

The Taiwan flag is very similar to other flags of the world in both its composition and colours, including the Samoa flag, the Red Ensign of the United Kingdom, the historic flag of the Khmer Republic, the former flag of Burma and the former flag of the Far East Republic.

It is one of the few vexillary emblems in the world that is adorned with a white sun like the flag of Malawi, Nepal and the Republic of Sakha in Russia.
