Among all flags, the flag of Vietnam consists of a bright red background with a five-pointed yellow star in its centre. The Vietnamese flag is called Quốc kì in the Vietnamese language. Among the country's symbols are the emblematic lotus flower (Hoa sen), the motto "Independence, Freedom, Happiness", the Vietnamese national anthem "Troops advance", the national coat of arms, as well as the vexillary emblem of the Vietnamese flag.

The Vietnam flag has been used since 29th September 1945 as a national flag and national naval flag when Vietnam obtained its independence from France and was proclaimed "Socialist Republic of Vietnam" (formerly French Indochina). Today, this Southeast Asian country crossed by the Mekong River, bordered by China, Laos, Cambodia, the China Sea and the Gulf of Thailand, is the thirteenth most populous country in the world. The Vietnamese government is a one-party communist state, which has influenced the composition and choice of colours of the Vietnamese flag: red to yellow star.

This 2/3 red flag with yellow star, which was officially adopted in 1945, is part of a long evolution of flags over the centuries of Vietnamese history and its various dynasties in Vietnam. What makes all Vietnam's flags unique in history is the very frequent use of red and yellow colours. On the old Vietnamese flags, the gold color represented the color of the sun and the red color represented the different historical regions of Tonkin, "Annam and Cochin China. They are found on the flags of the Republic of South Vietnam and the National Liberation Front of South Vietnam with a different meaning: red for the blood spilled and the fertility of women and yellow for the skin colour of South Vietnamese.

Today, the colours and composition of the two-tone red national flag with yellow star derives in particular from its symbolism in Vietnam's history and communist political values. The red colour of the background of the fabric symbolizes the blood that flowed for the country's independence. The yellow star embodies the unity of the country, the five branches of the star represent the unification of the five different social classes of Vietnam of the time that worked together to build a country with socialist and communist values: workers, peasants, soldiers, intellectuals and youth respectively.

You will notice that the current flag used after 1955 has a smaller star than the one used by the Democratic Republic of Vietnam variant (from North Vietnam) between 45 and 1955.
