Austrian flags for sale:  Discover the origins and the significance of the colours of the Austria flag

The Austrian flag, adopted at first in 1230, consists of three horizontal stripes of equal width, two red stripes at the ends and one white strip in the middle. A vexillary emblem of the Republic of Austria, a member of the European Union since 1995, the Austrian flag is one of Austria's national symbols, along with the black eagle, the Austrian coat of arms and the national anthem "Land der Berge, Land am Strom" (Land of the mountains, land on the river).

The Austrian national flag with a 2/3 ratio is the standard version of the civil and merchant marine flag of Austria. The other official flag is the flag with three red and white stripes affixed with the Austrian coat of arms, which is used as the country's war flag, state flag and navy flag.

The Austrian flag is a very old European flag. According to legend, it was during the siege of Saint-Jean d'Acre in 1191 during the third crusade that the Duke of Austria Leopold V of Babenberg found himself with his white tunic covered in blood with a single white space on the fabric remaining under his belt.  Later, it was King Henry VI of France who, in memory of the battle, gave the banner as gift to Leopold with three coloured bands (two red bands with a white band in the middle).

In fact, it was only in the 13th century that Austria began to use the current flag under the leadership of Frederick II of Austria, the last Duke of Austria. He too was part of Babenberg's house, which ruled the Austrian margraviate and then the Duchy of Austria for centuries.

For centuries, the Austrian flag was decorated with various insignia and emblems. In 1919 under the 1st Republic of Austria, the Austrian banner discarded its insignia. It is this last final version of the flag that was kept since 1945 after the Second World War when Austria became the Second Republic of Austria and ceased to be annexed by Germany (Nazi flag).

What does the Austrian coat of arms mean?

The Austrian coat of arms also came into force in 1945. They consist of a black eagle spitting red flames with a golden crown on its head, a sinister hammer (left side of the shield) and a dexter sickle (right side) in its claws. The eagle wears the shield in Austrian colours. These symbols evoke the alliance of the peasant class and the working class under the ruling elite of the Austrian Republic. On its legs, the eagle wears broken chains that recall the liberation from Nazism after the Second World War.
