England Flag Sale: Medieval origins of the UK flag and symbolism of the cross of Saint George

Going back into the history of the England flag, in 1188 Henry II of England and Philip II of France agreed to go on a crusade with Henry using a white cross while Philip a red cross. 13th-century authorities are unanimous on the point that the English King adopted the white cross and the French King the red one (and not vice versa as suggested by later use). It is not clear and not stated when the English people exchanged the white cross for the red-on-white one.

The England flag originates from St George's and the association of the red cross as an emblem of England can be traced back to the Middle Ages. In Year 1606, it was used as a component in the design of the Union Flag. Since the 1990s it has been used increasingly especially at national sporting events.

The flag of England is composed of a red cross on a white background: the cross of Saint George, patron saint in the 13th century of the Christian chivalry of the Kingdom of Great Britain. The cross of St. George is also present on the flag of the United Kingdom, the famous "Union Jack", not to be confused with the English flag.  A symbol of England since the end of the 12th century, the flag was first used by English sailors who traded on ships in the Mediterranean Sea and had the protection of the city of Genoa, which also carried coats of arms containing the cross of St. George. The legend of the cross of St. George tells that the Saint saved a city from a fearsome dragon by piercing it with a spear and after making a sign of the cross, an allegory of the victory of the Christian faith over the demon. It should be noted that in the Middle Ages, the red heraldic colour called the "gules" was very easy to obtain.

Nowadays, the red white and blue England flag is used as a civil flag and national flag of England. The official ratio of the national flag is 3:5 and the cross represents 1/5 of the width of the British flag. The same ratio is also used for other flags of the United Kingdom countries such as the flag of Wales and Scotland.
