The national flag of Finland is the emblem of the Republic of Finland, a member country of the European Union located in the far north-east of the European continent and part of the Nordic Scandinavian countries with Sweden and Norway. Composed of a blue Scandinavian cross on a white background, its proportions are 11:18. It is both a civil flag and a merchant flag of Finland and was first used by the famous Finnish yachting club Nyland Yacht Club in 1861 but was officially adopted in 1918, one year after gaining independence from Russia.

Purchase of the Finnish flag: discover the history and symbolism of the Finnish flags

Like the Finnish coat of arms, the Finnish national anthem "Maamme" which implies the Song of our land or the song of our country, the Finnish flag is one of Finland's national emblems.

The colours of the flag of Finland, blue and white, symbolise natural elements: blue for the lakes of Finland and white for the snow and the particularly bright nights of summer in Finland. The Scandinavian cross has a longer branch on the opposite side of the mast to fly in the wind without the cross appearing shortened. It is said that the cross is off-centre towards the flagpole, a feature found on other Scandinavian flags such as the Norwegian flag and the Danish flag.

Other variants of the flag are used in Finland, including the State flag and flag with the Finnish coat of arms in the centre of the cross and the war flag and naval flag with the Finnish coat of arms but with the end of the right branch of the cross ending in a bevel (or a swallow's wing). The President of the Republic of Finland has his own flag, similar to the Finnish war flag, but with a golden Freedom Cross in the upper left canton of the flag. The Freedom Cross is the emblem of the oldest order of Knighthood of Finland and the Grand Master who presides over it is the President of the Republic.
