Buying / Selling the flag of Iceland: geography and history of the country!

The Iceland flag has a blue background on which is drawn a red Scandinavian cross with white borders. It has been in use since 17th June, 1944 in Iceland.

Like the Icelandic national anthem called "Lofsöngur" (song of praise), the national motto "Með lögum skal land byggja" (literally: the nation is built on the law) and some traditional symbols of Iceland such as the raptor of the gyrfalcon name, the Icelandic flag is one of the symbols of the Republic of Iceland. This rectangular flag of 18/25 is used as a civilian flag and merchant flag currently on the island of Iceland. There are other variants such as the presidential flag with the Icelandic coats of arms in the centre of the cross which ends in a bevel, as well as the flag of the customs service with the letter T (such as the Tollstjori: customs direction in Iceland).

This volcanic island in the North Atlantic Ocean is one of the northernmost states on the European continent. It is also closer to the American continent than to Europe with its proximity to Greenland. Iceland is nevertheless attached to the European continent and its history because of its culture. It is part of the Council of Europe, EFTA, the European Economic Area but is not a member of the European Union (due to a history of fishing quotas). Did you know that this island in the far north was first discovered by Irish monks and then colonized by the Vikings?

Symbolism of the Iceland flag and history of the Scandinavian cross

Irrespective of the history of its flag, the current version of the Iceland flag which was adopted in 1944, refers to the period of medieval Christianity and has the same origins as the flag of Denmark: an ancient medieval symbolism.

Indeed, the history of the Scandinavian cross dates back to the time of the Crusades. The legend is about an episode in the life of King Valdemar II, King of the Slavs and Denmark, who, during the Battle of Lyndaniz, reportedly saw the drawing of the cross appear in the sky as an omen of victory against the Estonian invaders. He was nicknamed Valdemar II the victorious one. Another more pictorial interpretation suggests that the layout of the cross came from Valdemar's tunic after the battle: a white blood-stained tunic where the design of a cross would have appeared intact when he removed his belt and shield.

This off-centre Christian Scandinavian cross on the side of the flagpole is also found on other flags of the Nordic European countries such as the flags of Sweden, Norway, Finland and Denmark, without mentioning flags of other territories such as the Faroe Islands and the Åland Islands.

All national flags of other European countries are also on AZ Flag. Make the most of it.
