Sale of Luxembourg flags: Everything about the use, history and meaning of Luxembourg flags

The Luxembourg flag consists of 3 horizontal stripes: red, white and sky blue. This tricolour flag is the world flag that represents the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg internationally. It is the only remaining Grand Duchy on the planet. Its political system is a constitutional monarchy that functions with a representative democracy.  Luxembourg's reputation comes from its power and wealth. It is one of the smallest countries in Europe but its GDP per capita is one of the highest on the planet.

Luxembourg is one of the six founding countries of the European Union and hosts a large number of headquarters of the institutions of the European Union (such as the Court of Justice, the European Investment Bank, the Court of Auditors to name but a few).

The current Luxembourg national flag was adopted on 23rd June 1972 and it has a ratio of either ½ or 3/5. More recently, following a law of July 2007, the 1972 Luxembourg national maritime flag was adopted as the other Luxembourg civil flag. It consists of 10 horizontal blue and white bands interspersed (heraldic barry background) with a red creeping lion in the centre crowned with lampwork and armed with gold (yellow crown, claws and tongue). The maritime flag of Luxembourg is better known as "Roude Léiw" (red lion). It measures 5/7. The new civil flag has taken the same dimensions as the Luxembourg three colour. The Duchy of Luxembourg therefore officially has two national flags!

The different theories on the meaning of the colours of the Luxembourg flag

There are different theories on the origin of the three colours (blue, white and red) in Luxembourg. Some consider them as the colours of the Orange Nassau dynasty (like the flag of the Netherlands), others think that the three colours blue-white-red come from the arms of the former dukes and counts of the country and finally another theory suggests that the colours of Luxembourg are derived from the flag of France considered as a source of inspiration for the Luxembourg elites after the French Revolution.
