The Flag of Portugal also referred to as Bandeira de Portugal in Portuguese, is a bicolour flag in a rectangular shape with a field or stripes unevenly divided into green which is on the hoist and red on the fly. The lesser version of the national coat of arms which consists of the armillary sphere and the Portuguese shield is over the colour boundary. It is one of the symbols of the Portuguese Republic, a country that, together with Spain, forms the Iberian Peninsula. The flag of Portugal of dimension 2:3 acts as a civil flag and as a state and national flag used in the merchant navy, state and war. As far as the Portugal flag history is concerned, after the downfall of the constitutional monarchy, most precisely on 30th June 1911, this design was officially adopted for the new national flag of the First Portuguese Republic under the reign of Manuel II, after selection by a special commission whose members included Columbano Bordalo Pinheiro, João Chagas and Abel Botelho. The other flag of Portugal is the flag of the Portuguese army of 12:13 ratio which also carries the sphere, the coat of arms of Portugal as well as the motto "Esta é a Ditosa Patria Minha Amada"  which implies : « It is my happy and beloved homeland ».

Where to buy a Portuguese flag? Discover the history and meaning of the Portuguese flag

The flag of Portugal is charged with a powerful symbolism that characterizes the Portuguese teritorries and its history. The green on the side of the support mast measures 2/5 of the length of the flag is an emblem of hope and freedom. The red colour, 3/5 long is a symbol of the ardour in battle, the courage, the bloodshed of the men who died in battle or the revolution. The armillary sphere behind the national coat of arms, an instrument used in astronomy to materialize movement in the celestial sphere, evokes the Portuguese colonial empire and the historical period of great Portuguese discoveries, national pride for Portugal. The Portuguese coat of arms has a gules (red) support with 7 golden castles. Gold is the symbol of National Independence, while the seven castles, in popular tradition, represent Portuguese victories over their enemies, including the former kingdom of the Algarve or seven fortified cities. Inside is a large white shield containing 5 blue shields. The five azure escutcheons symbolize the victory over five Moorish kings in the battle that preceded the coronation of King Afonso Henrique. In each shield, five small white dots can be seen: Romanesque style pieces evoking five wounds of Christ on the cross.
