All about the use of the flag of Serbia
Among all flags, the Serbia flag consists of three vertical stripes in red, blue and white with a shield placed slightly on the left side of the flag (pole side). It is the emblem of the Republic of Serbia, one of the largest countries that historically formed Yugoslavia. Currently in Serbia, there are three variants of the Serbian flag.
The main flag of Serbia is the tricolour with a 2/3 ratio crest and it is used as a state flag and national flag. The second flag is a simple tricolour red blue blue white which is used as a civilian ground flag and merchant flag. The third variant consists of a red ensign (red background) with the state flag in the upper left canton. It is used as a naval flag by the Serbian river fleet. This militarily neutral country has no war flag.
Learn more about the origins of the colours of the Serbian flag
Did you know that Serbia adopted its current flag in 2010? In fact, Serbia, this country of former Yugoslavia is a relatively young country as a new independent republic and a member of the European Union! The Republic of Serbia was proclaimed on 5th June 2006, but the history of the country and the Serbian people dates back to the 7th century. Serbia in history with a great H was Principality, Kingdom, Empire then became the kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and finally the State Union of Serbia and Montenegro. It was only in 2006 that the Republic of Serbia was proclaimed.
The three Serbian colours are the Pan-Slavic colours that echo the ancient colours of the Russian Empire and its different Slavic peoples. They can be found on the Croatian flag, the flag of Slovakia, Slovenia, the Czech Republic and of course the Russian flag.
The Serbia flag also bears the Serbian coat of arms. This recent composition combines the arms of the Obrenovic dynasty (which ruled in Serbia in the 19th century), the two-headed heraldic eagle (with two heads) of the Nemanjic dynasty (medieval Serbia) and a Serb cross. The Serbian cross is a white cross of Greek origin with 4 C lettering from the Cyrillic alphabet used as a symbol in Serbia since the Middle Ages.
