Symbolism of the national flag of Nauru

The tricolor banner of Nauru has a single horizontal yellow stripe and a white star in the lower corner of the flagpole on a blue background.

- As with many flags of Oceania, the blue background of the current flag of Nauru represents the Pacific Ocean.

- The stripe across the middle of the field represents the equator, and the star directly below this stripe represents Nauru, which is only one degree of latitude south of the equator.

- The star has twelve points because it also symbolizes the twelve indigenous tribes of the nation. The color white was chosen to emphasize that phosphate mining has been a pillar of Nauru's economic development.

The coat of arms: the other national emblem of Nauru

When Nauru gained independence in 1968, two national emblems were created; first the national tricolor flag and then the coat of arms. The main element of this emblem is a shield. The shield, which is surrounded by the symbols of the tribal chiefs, is itself divided into three parts. In the upper part you will find the symbol of phosphorus, again to emphasize the economic contribution of the phosphate mines. On the bottom right side you will find a flowering branch of tamaka to symbolize the flora and on the left side you will find a beautiful Frigate on a pole above the waves to symbolize the fauna.

The flag of Nauru can be found in various dimensions: flags and banners, outdoor flags, pennant with gold fringe, flag with flag poles, nautical flags, table flags with bases, car flags and many more.
