Symbolism of the Vanuatu Flag

The official flag of Vanuatu consists of two equal horizontal bands of red (top) and green. A black isosceles triangle (located on far left side near the mast) is placed in the center of the two stripes that make up this emblem. In the center of the triangle is an icon representing a boar's tusk surrounding two intertwined 'Namele' leaves.

The boar's tusk is a symbol of prosperity in Melanesian culture and peace. A yellow band bordered by black that forms a Y shape runs through the stripes and triangle of the national flag of Vanuatu. The colors of the flag and the many elements present on this banner have a symbolic value. The red color of this flag is a symbol of unity between nature and mankind and represents the blood of wild boars and humans. The green color represents the flora of the Indian Ocean Islands and their natural wealth, while the black color represents the inhabitants of Vanuatu. Vanuatu is an archipelago composed of thirteen large islands that form a Y, hence the fact that the yellow line bordered by black forms a Y on this emblem. The population of Vanuatu is 90% Christian and the color yellow represents the divine blessing. The importance of Christian faith in Vanuatu is also shown on the coat of arms whish features the sentence ‘We stand with God’.
