The emblem of Nîmes – The famous crocodile
The official emblem of Nîmes sometimes raises questions about the symbols. Where does this famous crocodile attached to a palm tree comes from? This official symbol is present on the city's coat of arms. To understand it better, let's go to Egypt! After the Battle of Actium was won by Octavian, the enemy brother of Mark Antony, who was married to Cleopatra, he decided to celebrate his victory by marking the date with a red iron and minted a coin in Nemausus. This famous bronze coin remained in use for over 40 years. On the front, the emperor Augustus and his son-in-law Agrippa can be seen and on the reverse, the famous crocodile chained to the palm tree crowned with laurels. The crocodile and the palm tree are emblematic symbols of Egypt which shows an Egypt being subjected to Rome.
There are many places in Nîmes where you can see this famous logo: La Place du Marché with the crocodile fountain signed by Martial Raysse or the 4 crocodiles on the main staircase of the Hôtel de Ville which have been leaning there for 164 years.
