This attachment has its origins in the history of Spain, particularly during the periods of the First Spanish Republic between 1873 and 1974, the Second Spanish Republic from 1931 to 1939, known as the Republic of All Hopes or the War of Spain (Guerra Civil Española) from 1936 to 1939, which opposed the supporters of the Second Spanish Republic against nationalist rebels and totalitarian putschists led by General Franco.
The members of the Republican camp were divided into various tendencies: democrats, nationalists, socialists, communists, Trotskyist groups, Stalinists or the libertarian anarchist revolutionary movement, they all shared the hope of establishing a republic in Spain. Following the Spanish Civil War and the victory of Franquism and the defeat of the Republicans, some Republicans were forced into exile later. In 1975, following the death of Franco and his totalitarian regime, the Spanish Monarchy was restored with the establishment of King Juan Carlos I. In fact, Spain has been a Republic for only two short periods of its history.
Today, Spain is a Constitutional Monarchy with a democratic parliamentary system and the right to a plurality of political parties. The Republican trend of thought in Spain continues to exist among the Spanish population and indeed some republican political parties are represented in Spain in the Spanish government.
