The Muslim flag, also known as the Islamic flag, the Islam flag or flag of Islam is a symbolic emblem of Islam, an Abrahamic religion based on the dogma of absolute monotheism. One flag in particular has been officially recognized by 57 member states. It is the flag of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), a dignified expression of the Muslim world, containing the cultural ideologies and theologies of Islam. Headquartered in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, the OIC also holds a permanent delegation at the United Nations.
Founded on September 25, 1969, the organization aims to promote Islamic culture, religious beliefs while honouring the history of Islam, pledging allegiance to the Muslim population and its contributions throughout the world on socio-economic, political, cultural levels. The OIC promises rightful behaviour in preserving the Muslim world and its theological ideologies and adherents while honouring Islamic culture. Amongst its many objectives, the establishment centrally aims at serving the interests, rights and civil liberties of the Muslim community from a global perspective, wishing to bring an end to war and invasion against Palestine and Syria.
The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) flag
The OIC is represented by a rectangular green flag, green being recognised as the dignified colour of Islam. At the center of the flag, you will find a red crescent moon with the islamic scriptures "Allahu Akbar", meaning "God is Great". However, the flag has changed since 2011. The official symbol on the flag is now a green crescent moon and a globe with the "Kaaba", a sacred building of Muslim pilgrimage in Islam, at the center of the globe.
The organization is also committed to rightful counterterrorism, leading a fight against all kinds of islamist radicalism, or any form of jurisprudence leading to persecution or oppression. The OIC is against all forms of Islamic radicalism or Islamic fundamentalism, whether represented by extremism or orthodox propaganda of Islamic faith. In the global extremist attacks of Islamic radicalism in recent years, several individuals, whether believers of Islam or members of other communities, have been assassinated by Islamist groups. Western Muslims such as American Muslims often find themselves targeted or flagged as members of the Islamic state or adherents to Jihadism despite holding secular beliefs. Very often, such a situation leads to the persecution of the Muslim community. As a result, the OIC is helping to raise awareness among non-Muslims, so as to destroy any conceited or biased ideologies pertaining to Islam and the Muslim population. The organisation centrally aims at establishing due legitimacy over perceptions of Islam.
