In this category of world religion flags, AZ Flag takes you on a journey to discover Sikhism : the fifth largest religion worldwide. Sikhism takes birth in the Punjabi region of South Asia, inspired by Guru Nanak preaching the philosophy of Ik Onkar : One God. As such, Sikh values hold love, mutual understanding, devotion and free-spirit as background elements. Sikhism celebrates the notion that people, irrespective of religion or socio-cultural background may find happiness and meaning all the while combining Muslim and Hindu influences from India and Pakistan to bring a sense of unity through disciplined meditation on the divine name that is God.
Today, AZ Flag invites you to take a look at the perennial banner of Sikhism known as the Nishan Sahib: one of the key illustrations of Sikh faith. This particular banner can easily be displayed using a flagpole in a dimension of 150 x 90 cm, with eyelets for a size of 90 x 60 cm or with cords attached to a 45 x 30 cm dimension. This symbol of Sikh faith can be proudly demonstrated during ceremonious occasions held at the local temple during a religious festival or even as decor on a state building.
The Nishan Sahib: History, Culture and Significance for Sikhs around the world
The Nishan Sahib or Respected Banner is a triangular orange or saffron coloured flag with the Khanda symbol placed at the center of the flag. The Khanda, coloured in blue, symbolises a double-edged sword : one of the many illustrations of Sikh faith. The Khanda is a representation of the ongoing spiritual battle that the gurudwara (disciple of Guru Nanak) ought to experience in the Khalsa panth (path of devotion) : inspired by guru Gobind Singh. In Sikhism, this symbol of Sikh faith also denotes the notion of divine authority which God holds over the gurudwara's lifestyle and actions. The Khanda is a reminder in Sikhism that God is eternal: ruling over the lives of individuals irrespective of their religion, gender, socio-economic background or elements pertaining to their ethnicity. Overall, Sikhism adheres to the creation of a healthy, happy community where people can all come together to celebrate divine essence.
This saffron banner represents far more than just Sikh faith or customs of Sikhism. The Nishan Sahib is not to be perceived as a piece of cloth denoting religion within a temple or another spiritual venue such as the Anandpur Sahib: it has also been used as a symbol of protest, a mark for equality to be established. For instance, in January 2021, Sikh farmers set out in Delhi against the farm and agriculture laws passed in India. While the protests usually occurred in Punjab and Haryana, these gradually spread to Delhi at the Red Fort building : the residence of the Mughal royalty. Several people upholding a background of Sikh faith were seen waving the orange coloured or saffron coloured banner marked by the Khanda as a means to affirm the opinion of the Sikh community against prejudice and limiting legislative bills under indian territory. Overall, the march in Delhi proved to be a golden opportunity for members of the Sikh community to affirm their identity and opinion. As such, the Nishan Sahib celebrates Sikh identity and culture. It is not only a religious symbol to be displayed at a particular festival or cultural holiday, it is also one of the most significant illustrations of the elements of Sikhism.
The Sikh flag also comes in several dimensions and styles. The original Nishan Sahib may also be coloured with a yellow or red and orange taint : variations of the flag include a yellow banner or another choice of shade with the Khanda symbol shown in dark blue. Overall, people may choose to accommodate the Nishan Sahib to their own personal preferences : they may use this flag as a symbol of allegiance to Sikhism on the day of a Sikh festival. Other symbols, images, photos or illustrations of faith may be embedded into the Sikh flag as a demonstration of unity and integrity.
