Tahiti is a volcanic and mountainous island with a tropical climate located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. It is part of the French overseas collectivity: French Polynesia. This island of 1042 km2 surrounded by a coral reef is part of the leeward islands and the archipelago Society.
It is the largest and most populated islands of French Polynesia. It is home to the capital of Papeete. Tourism is a major economic asset of this island territory. The geographical map representing the territory of Tahiti reminds us of the shape of a butterfly, in fact the two territories of Grande Tahiti (Tahiti Nui) and Petite Tahiti (Tahiti Iti) are connected by an isthmus called Taravao. Tahitian culture is extremely rich and varied and it can also be a tourist destination!
The flag of Tahiti Island is composed of three horizontal bands red, white and red. It resembles the flag of French Polynesia, but unlike the flag of French Polynesia it is not decorated with the central emblem of the Polynesian pirogue. Sometimes the name of the island "TAHITI" appears in red capital letters in the centre of the white band.
The red and white colour of the Tahiti flag evokes its belonging to French Polynesia because they are the traditional Polynesian colours. It is in particular the colour that refers to the "maro ura", the red Polynesian feather belt that only the royal family was allowed to wear. In 1868, the flag of Tahiti, which was confused with that of the Society Islands, included a reminder of the French tricolour flag in the upper left corner.
Today, the local anthem of French Polynesia, this overseas country of France, also evokes the beautiful Tahiti as its title indicates "Ora'O Tahiti Nui" (Long live the Great Tahiti). The official national anthem of Tahiti being the French anthem "La Marseillaise" while its official national flag is the French tricolour blue-white-red flag!
