Amsterdam: the capital of the Netherlands "in brief"!
Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands, is the most populous city in the Netherlands and one of its major economic centres. It is located in the west of the country in the province of North Holland. It is crossed by the river Amstel, a tributary of the Dutch lake IJ, which gave it its name: literally "Amstelredamme" which means the dam on the Amstel.
A multicultural and cosmopolitan European city, this city port is considered to be the Venice of the North due to its countless canals within the city: more than 100 km of canals with 1500 bridges linking about 90 islands! Due to this incredible urban architecture listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Amsterdam attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists every year. The Amsterdam flag is a derivative of the coat of arms of the city! It consists of two horizontal red stripes with a horizontal black stripe in the centre and three white crosses in saltire on the black stripe! The three white crosses are crosses of Saint Andrew!
According to history, this coat of arms was the coat of arms of a former medieval Dutch noble family from Kennemerland in West Friesland (which became a county of Holland): the Persijn family. According to historical sources, Knight Jan Persijn was Lord of Amsterdam from 1280 to 1282.
According to a popular legend, the three crosses of St. Andrew were used as symbols to protect against fire, floods and especially the Black Death: the greatest plague epidemic of the Middle Ages of the 14th century! However, according to the dates of the Persijn family's arrival in Amsterdam and the arrival of the great plague do not correspond. This story would therefore be an anachronism and therefore not founded! Still, it is captivating and adds a certain charisma to this beautiful Dutch flag!
The black band in the center represents the Amstel River that crosses the city and most certainly the 3 crosses three fords on this river!
