Among the flags of the world, international flags or historical flags, the famous flag of France (France being the founding member states of the European Union) is a blue, white and red coloured flag, also known as the French Tricolour or simply the Tricolour. Going back into French history or most precisely the French Flag history, the tri coloured flag was adopted as the French flag of the French Navy since 1974. Moreover, following the July revolution in 1830, during his reigh, the "citizen-king", Louis-Philippe restored this tri colored flag as the national emblem of France which is hoisted on France National Day. The France flag is highly symbolic and features three vertical bands or stripes coloured blue (hoist side), white, and red.

France, officially known as the French Republic, is ruled according to the Constitution of the Fifth Republic.  However, the laws of the current constitution originates from the declaration of rights agreed during the French Revolution and then at the end of World War Two.

Origin, symbolism and meaning of the French national flag: why is the French flag red white and blue (bleu blanc rouge)?

The meaning of the three colours of the national flag has ancient origins and dates back to the period of the French Revolution of 1789. They are the 3 colours of Liberty, of the revolutionary and republican symbol par excellence, which is also found on the American flag of the United States. The blue and red colours of the French flag symbolize the colours of the city of Paris and the National Guard while the white colour, for some people, symbolizes royalty and for others (particularly in the 1789 texts) it is a symbol of the colour of France or the Kingdom of France. It is said to have been designed by Jacques louis David, a French painter and leader of the classical movement at the request of the National Convention (another name for the 1st French Republic).

Initially, the royal government used many flags, mainly a blue shield and the Royal Arms of France on a state flag. During the French Revolution, the Paris militia wore a cockade of blue and red colours. According to French general Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette, white was considered to be the "ancient French colour" and it was later added to the militia cockade, which became part of the National Guard’s uniform in order to create a tricolour. In fact, the colours and design of the tricolour flag originate from the cockade. The only difference was that the 1790 flag's colours were reversed. An amended design by Jacques-Louis David was adopted in 1794 and the royal white flag was used during the Bourbon restoration from 1815 to 1830. Finally, the tricolour was brought back after the July Revolution and has been used ever since 1830.

As far as the dimensions of the French flag are concerned, the current official flag must be twice longer than its height, i.e. a 3/2 rectangular state flag and its bands of colours are of equal width. Officially, square flags with equal width bands are often used.
