The flag of Italy or the Italian flag which is also known as the il Tricolore in Italian is a tricolour featuring three equally-sized vertical bands or stripes of green, white and red. The green colour is at the hoist side. Being the emblem of the Italian Republic, the current Italian state flag is used as the national flag on January 7 to celebrate the « Flag Day » of Italy. The proportion of the Italian flag is 2:3.

The flag history, going back into the history of Italy, proclaims that the Italian three colour was first used by the Cisalpine Republic in 1797, which supplanted Milan following Napoleon's victorious army which crossed Italy in 1796. The colours chosen by the Cispadane Republic were red and white, which were the colours of the recently conquered flag of Milan; and green representing the colour of the Milanese civic guard’s uniform. Some have attributed particular values to the colours of the Italian flag. A common interpretation is that the green represents the country's plains and the hills; white is the symbolism of the snow-capped Alps and red portrays of the blood spilt in the Wars of Italian Independence and Unification. Religiously, the green colour represents hope, the white represents faith and the red represents charity which references the three theological virtues.
