Pelagio the conqueror (Pelayo el conquistador) is a very important historical figure in Asturias and is considered a hero in Spain. Indeed he was the first king of Asturias. It was he who initiated the Reconquista, the period of the Middle Ages during which the territory of the Muslim Iberian Peninsula was reclaimed by the Christian kingdoms.
