Liberia Flag in brief

The Liberian flag consists of six horizontal red stripes and five horizontal white stripes, followed by a blue square in the canton with a white five-pointed star. It is one of the symbols of the Republic of Liberia, a West African country that borders Côte d'Ivoire to the east, Guinea to the north and Sierra Leone to the south. This African country is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean. Liberia is a member of ECOWAS.

This former colony of the United States (where you read well... of the United States!) obtained its independence on 26th July 1847!

Have you not noticed the striking similarity of this African flag with the flag of the United States of America?

Discover the exceptional history of the Liberian flag!

In fact, Liberia has a very unusual history and bears its name well. It was created in 1827 by an American colonization society (the National Colonization Society of America) to settle freed black slaves! Liberia was therefore a new country for freedom, a country of hope and renewal!

The colony of Liberia and then the autonomous community carried a variant of the American flag, with 13 red and white stripes and a white Christian cross in the canton differentiating it from the USA flag. This flag was chosen to highlight the Christian faith of the settlers who were there. The capital of the time (now Monrovia) was baptized the City of Christ.

As soon as this country officially received its independence in 1847, it chose to take its inspiration from the USA flag (with 24 stars in the canton at the time) and replace it with the current Liberian flag, which bears only one star and only eleven stripes to evoke the eleven representatives of the three counties of Liberia (Montserrado, Sinoe and Grand Bassa)! The white star is unique because it represented the only free nation in Africa at the time!

The Liberian flag is now the official national flag and the official maritime flag of Liberia!
