History of the flag of Iran with AZ Flag, world online flag store

Adopted on 29th January 1980, the Iranian flag of 4/7 proportions serves as the national flag and national maritime flag in Iran.

Did you know that this flag was officially adopted as the emblem of Iran following the Islamic revolution to replace the former imperial flag of the Pahlavi dynasty whose last representative was Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavi? It was following this revolution that Iran moved from the Monarchy to a new republican regime with the famous Ayatollah Khomeini.

Everything you need to know about the meaning of the colours of the Iranian flag

The three-coloured bands of the Iranian tricolour flag evoke fundamental religious concepts and ideologies in Iran. Thus, the colour green recalls the Muslim religion: Islam and also represents the growth of the country; white symbolizes great human values such as honesty, righteousness and peace; red represents the courage and blood of the martyrs.

On the red and green stripes of the Iran flag, we can see the inscription Allah Akbar in Arabic (God is great) repeated 11 times on each stripe (lower edge of the green strip and upper edge of the red strip).

The imperial emblem of the lion and sword with a sun on top was replaced in 1980 by a new national emblem. It is the national symbol of Iran that has been approved by Khomeini. This emblem is a stylized red shape with the motifs of a sword in the centre (reminiscent of jihad) and four crescent moons (symbols of Islam), these five motifs also refer to the five pillars of Islam. The Iranian emblem, which is a stylised form of the word Allah, is surmounted by an Arabic alphabetical sign: the šadda. It serves as a reminder of the Muslim profession of faith "there is no God but God".

The entire monogram also recalls the symbol of a tulip, a form used to represent martyrs in Iran. In Iran, legend has it that a tulip flower grows where a man died for his homeland.
