Revive the historical moments of Alsace thanks to the purchase of a beautiful flag of Alsace in our shop. The Rot un Wiss flag (red and white flag) is a historical legendary powerful Alsatian symbol of the festivities of the beginning of the 20th century. The song "Das Elsässisches Fahnenlied" (Song of the Flag of Alsace) is dedicated to it. The Rot un Wiss flag was a strong sign of the Alsatian identity and protest of the Alsatian people which at one point in its history felt neither German nor French, but totally Alsatian! It displays the ancestral colours of Alsace, the red and white colors. The Alsatian people adopted this flag on January 25, 1912, a date totally engraved in the Alsatian history. The flag was never recognized by the German Empire. It remained the popular symbol of Alsace until 1914, when the 1st World War broke out between France and Germany. At the end of the Great War, Alsace was reintegrated into France. Nevertheless, throughout history, the Rot un Wiss stayed a strong symbol of Alsatian opposition to any abuse of authority and a strong sign of demand (strike of the Alsatian railway workers from Lorraine in France in 1922, Bloody Sunday of Colmar in 1926). In short, the flag of Alsace is the symbol of all the struggles and all the victories! During the 2014 territorial reform in France, the Alsatians took out the Rot Un Wiss flag as a sign of disapproval and have it flown on their houses. This was done to protest against the "administrative" disappearance of the Alsace region which merged with the Champagne Ardennes region to form the new Grand Est region. On November 11, 2018 (100 years after the proclamation of the Sovereign State of Alsace Lorraine), the Rot Un Wiss flag (secretly hoisted on the night of the 10th to the 11th) proudly floated in the wind on the top of Strasbourg Cathedral... a secret act (almost heroic?) still unclaimed to this day! You've caught on: Alsatian people really love their flag and so do we!
